Jin is a Java client for various chess servers. It currently supports the Internet Chess Club (chessclub.com) and the Free Internet Chess Server (freechess.org) but is designed to be able to support any chess server.
If you don't have your own computer, then Jin is the best default way you can access the Free Internet Chess Server. It's a good basic program, but it could use a few minor improvements. It does not offer sliding pieces, which is a standard feature found on most other chess sites and programs. Also, it would be nice to have a rematch button handy when you finish a game. But overall, it's a fine program and many people (including me) are grateful to the author for writing it.
Good, clear interface which works well on my linux machine.
Very clear interface. It will be interesting to add customized buttons like scid do
