Your average lightweight PHP blog application made easy thanks to a robust group of Ajax plugins - Ajax file browser, Ajax sortable tables, etc. Basis for organization is creating a tree hierarchy of pages, then writing and attaching stories to the pages

  • JaxBlog Version 1.5 Released

The two new big features are panes and user management, which will be described in depth later, but first a word about the mission of JaxBlog. With all of the changes I've made and suggestions from clients I've received, I've been tempted to try to turn JaxBlog into a full-blown CMS. But I'm quite happy I haven't. There's some really good CMS systems out there, such as Drupal and Joomla, which handle scaling for medium and large sized organizations really well. I feel no need to reinvent their wheel. If you need to get a website off the ground quickly, if you only intend to have a single administrator, if you need features like a rich text editor, calendaring, slideshow, etc., and if you'd like the ability to easily tinker with layout, CSS, or PHP, then JaxBlog is for you. That's not to say JaxBlog can only drive a small 5 page website. I imagine you could easily admin a 50 page site with the tool, the only bottleneck is the person entering the content. So, all that aside, what's in this release? Panes: previously the admin could add stories to any page but was stuck with certain widgets (such as the calendar) showing up on all pages with little ability to turn the widget off. Panes allow greater flexibility with these widgets - admins can now turn them on/off, and there are more widgets available, such as login and raw html. More to come, too, such as a search widget. User Management: admin can now restrict pages to require a user login. Admin must then use the user management to create user accounts. Also, the Selenium tests for the application have been updated and a number of bugs caught (such as a nasty refoldering issue) as a result.

  • JaxBlog Version 1.4 Released

You favorite lightweight PHP + Ajax blog software has just received a number of upgrades, most notably: 1) switch to adodb from adodb_lite 2) created Selenium tests for installer and admin In a previous news announcement, I explained how the inclusion of adodb_lite should mean JaxBlog is portable between databases. Despite over a decade of programming experience, I did not realize how naive such a statement could be until I actually tried JaxBlog with various databases. Some impediments to being cross platform include: no vendor follows the standard for ANSI SQL create table statements, there is no standard for date types manipulation, and there is no standard for autogenerated columns. As a result of this, and as adodb_lite does not handle any of these situations well, I've had to switch to adodb. Once I realized how much of an impact trying to support multiple databases would have on my code base - almost every sql statement was affected - I investigated automated test solutions to help quickly identify bugs. I've settled on Selenium for now, and the tests included with JaxBlog should run without problem if you've installed Selenium IDE as a add-in for Firefox. I'm quite happy with the results, as quite a few bugs were found and I'm confident this release is a stable one. Also of note, I've pruned the number of 'supported' databases from a theoretical 'use any database' down to just Postgres, Mysql, and Sqlite. That's right - JaxBlog now runs with Sqlite, which is part of the default php installation these days, and should allow hosted sites to run with very little set up or administration. On the bonus side, because I've pruned adodb down to three vendors, the zip distributable should be quite a bit smaller than before. Thank you to friends and family for putting up with me as I spent most of Christmas '07 sick, in bed, and coding these enhancements.

  • JaxBlog Version 1.2 Released

You favorite lightweight PHP + Ajax blog software has just received a number of upgrades, most notably: 1) guided install wizard 2) themable html templates, css, images 3) now includes adodb_lite, runs on many databases I'm most proud of the guided install wizard, as it should allow users who have little PHP experience to get up and running quickly. Simply download the .zip distributable, drop it onto a PHP host of your choice, unzip the file, and use a web browser to browse the main directory. Since this is your first time visiting the blog, you will be forwarded to the install wizard, which will walk you through file system and database setup. Thanks to adodb_lite, there's a good chance your database is supported! In addition to the install wizard, many changes have been made to accommodate the novice user / developer. HTML templates along with css themes have been separated in a way that makes re-theming easy. A central config file controls most aspects of foldering. And certain features such as the calendar are now modularized and may be easily disabled from the config file. Thank you to everyone that contributed to the project, especially the small businesses based in Iowa, USA, whose websites are based on JaxBlog.
