This is a feature. The HP9861, 9862, and 9866 have no background image but just a white (paper) output area. See example figures in user manual chap. 3.2.1, 3.3.1, and 3.5.1.

When launching Hewlett-Packard series 9800 emulator HP9810A.cmd on Windows XP SP2 (all updates installed) running on 2.4G AMD64, the following windows open:
- HP9810A
- HP9860A
- HP9861A
- HP9862A
- HP9865A
- HP9866A
HP9810A, HP9860A Marked Card Reader and HP9865A Cassette Memory display fine.
HP9861A, HP9862A and HP9866A display blank with white background.
