Hotaru is an XNA-based Game Engine that is intended to be used for 2D Action RPGs. Game Developers can use Tonbo (a Visual Studio Plug-in) to create and distribute games that run on Hotaru.

After much consideration, I have decided to move the Hotaru project from Sourceforge to CodePlex. I believe that this will dramatically help the future development of Hotaru. Over the past few months, SourceForge has been making significant changes to their site. SourceForge has never been very user friendly, but their services have always been great (until recently). Due to degrading performance and decreased reliability, I feel that SourceForge no longer facilitates the development process but instead obstructs it. CodePlex has been maturing nicely over the past two and a half years. Its services are easier to use, faster, and more reliable than those of SourceForge. In addition to better service, I believe that CodePlex provides a more receptive community. I like to describe the typical SourceForge community member as a hardcore, open source, Linux junkie. These people tend to reject everything Microsoft. Because CodePlex was both founded by Microsoft and is also open source, the members tend to be far more receptive than those of SourceForge. I believe that moving to a more receptive community along with more reliable, faster, and easier to use development services will help Hotaru be a more successful product in the end. The new project page can be accessed at http://www.codeplex.com/hotaru. Please stop by and show your support!

A few days ago, the XNA Team announced that XNA Game Studio 3.0 would have the ability to build games for the Zune platform. This opens an exciting new door for Hotaru! Neither Xbox nor Zune are in the plans for the initial release of Hotaru, but you can certainly expect to see them sometime in the future.
Hotaru has a new look! The purpose of the new web site is to provide a perspective on the project directed toward end-users. Since many of our users will be developers, I have sourced a lot of the information from the SourceForge.net project page (such as the news). The code for the web site can be found in the project's subversion repositry under the HotaruWeb project. For those of you who are not already there, the new web site can be found at http://hotaru.sourceforge.net
I am excited to announce that after years of dreaming, this project will finally be realized. I'm getting the project all set up here on SourceForge; A basic website will also be available where people can keep tabs on the progress of the project. Development on this project is going to begin with Tonbo (the tools for making the games). I made this decision on the idea that development of games can begin when the tools are complete, and this will allow concurrent development on the engine and the games making games available sooner. This is going to require a lot of planning ahead so you can expect to see a lot of design documents and specifications released before coding actually begins. Also, if you are interested in the project, don't be afraid to actively participate! (Even if it is just in the discussion forms.)
