HadoopDB is a hybrid of parallel database and MapReduce technologies. It approaches parallel databases in performance and efficiency, yet still yields the scalability, fault tolerance, and flexibility of MapReduce systems.

A fantastic approach to combining the strengths of parallel RDBMS technology with the strengths of Map/Reduce. These strengths are great solutions to their respective weaknesses. A best of both worlds solution and very clever.
