    you did add the lines to /etc/profile, didn't you? your last post suggests perhaps you added to them the wrong place.

    to be clear, these lines:

    # SCIM
    export XMODIFIERS='@im=SCIM'
    export GTK_IM_MODULE="scim"
    export XIM_PROGRAM="scim -d"
    export QT_IM_MODULE="scim"
    scim -d

    need to go in /etc/profile (or possible ~/.profile, but mine are in /etc/profile, and it's working well for me)

    this is a tractable issue - keep going!
