  • Excellent project: A little difficult to get started on but well worth the effort. I'm thankful that I've a background in IT app development and data storage. Fantastic community for all sorts of support. Open source is another feature.
  • Thank you very much for the free open source program!
  • I'm more and more discovering Gramps and we find it both powerful, and easy enough to sue for us to manipulte it correctly. Well done guys.
  • I also find the product to be difficult at times as some things are hidden deep with out much explanation , it would be nice to have a manual for purchase to use as a reference. I don’t mind the online manual in a form to send off to have printed, is this possible?
  • Tried to like this. Very scattered. I spent 1 hour trying to add a child to myself. Quit after I couldn't figure it out. The documentation is not even close to current, so I am moving on. I realize this is open source, but this is a review of the software, not the people behind it, and no, I'm not going to fix it.
  • I have been using Gramps for years (with Windows and Linux) and I enjoy its features a lot: its windows are more independant than windows-born softwares, the filters give a lot of possibilities and the soft runs quickly on my computers. The biggest trouble is that Gramps (5.0.1-1) crashes at almost every session (I am using it in Windows, at the moment, adding people, notes and pictures) . My file is 8500 people, not a huge one. I would like to use Gramps as my main genealogy program, it is the one I prefer. I use also Legacy Family Tree and sometimes Ancestris (no big problems with gedcom export / import with Gramps). Sure, for me the only trouble with Gramps are those "unattended errors" that happen several times a day, sometimes several time a session. I must add that I tried downgrading to Gramps 4.28 on Linux (using the repository version instead of v. 5) but I had many crashes too so I reinstalled v. 5. I do not know anything in programing but I noticed the errors always come from some *.py and the last line in the error report is always "sqlite3.OperationalError: cannot start a transaction within a transaction". My OS: Linux MATE 18.04, Windows 10, up to date.

Please download and install Gramps v5.0.2 which should fix the "sqlite3.OperationalError: cannot start a transaction within a transaction" issue. If you notice an issue in future please report it on the bug tracker https://gramps-project.org/bugs/

  • I started using GRAMPS about 5 years ago. Every now and then a evaluate other genealogy software but so far I always returned to GRAMPS. What I like about the software is its flexibility and features, especially the management of sources and places. When you start using GRAMPS it has a rather steep learning curve. But once you have developed an understanding where you store things like places, sources, repositories, etc. within GRAMPS the entry of data is very efficient. Though, I have to admit the UI is not the prettiest one in the market of genealogy software, GRAMPS does its job of handling even huge databases of ancestors. A wiki system is available as a documentation and help systems. There you will find even "How-tos" of the main work-flows within GRAMPS. There is no single manual. So, one has to be prepared to spend some time looking for the appropriate information. What makes it even worse is the fact that currently 2 major releases (3.x and 4.x) are maintained in parallel. Thus, one have to figure out whether the help given in the wiki applies to the release you are using. So, IMHO the documentation needs a radical brush-up and update which will help especially beginners in getting to know the software. One the other hand, there is an active community of users and developers answering questions within hours. So, if you expect a comprehensive manual you will be disappointed.

  • I found this app bundled in fedora 19 when I converted from Windows. How fortuitous!! I had been using rootsmagic on windows which I liked alot. I had a learning curve but then genealogy is complicated. I think this app is simply great! Notice I have not rated support -- that is only because I have not called on them. The extensive documentation covering both technical aspect of the application and subject matter of the field and intuitive design, justly described, of the application has precluded my need to ask for help.

  • AVAST PRO antivirus gave start the installation, informing about the virus in the installation package GrampsAIO-4.1.1-86bfff_win32_py27.exe.

  • I have found this to be a very useful package in researching my family tree. However, there are several areas that could be improved. I had just got used to using the old Census gramplet, but now I find the new new method of entering Census data confusing and difficult to follow. The whole documentation needs a thorough update (in my opinion) - it just hasn't kept in line with the numerous changes. The second major gripe is that Windows is treated like a poor orphan. Releases are lagging behind - whilst minority platforms such as Unix and Mac always seem to be up to date. One thing I am pleased about is that Windows 10 is supported but there are occasional crashes. So in summary this is a good package (particularly as it is all open source and free) but could be so much better.
  • very easy to use

  • Lots of potential however the program crashes (in windows 7) every hour and now the windows-controls have disappeared and the window cannot be resized. I applied for bug account but never received the verification (20 hours and waiting). The interface is confusing and many simple features are missing like a middle name field. adding parents is a tedious task.
  • The developers have put a lot of time into this program and made it quite complex. There lies the problem. The program is not well organized, with options scattered in seemingly random places. There is also so much useless garbage in this program that it becomes very clumsy. Using "given name" and "surname" instead of first and last name is just plain clumsy. Having options for 7 different calendar types when nobody has used anything by the Gregorian calendar in the last 1,000 years is a perfect example of what's wrong with this program. It seems as if they typed up a list of 1,000 features in Latin, then ran it through Google translate, then implemented them all willy-nilly.
  • Gramps 4.x will not install on Peppermint Ice. I get the following: Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: python2.7 I cannot find and install python2.7. Have installed 2.6 and 3.0 but still get the message and installation stop.
  • Thank you very much! Can be simplified? Hello from Russia!

  • Simply the best genealogy software. Ability to produce the most accurate and detailed graph charts, with full control over the persons involved. And of course 100% Unicode! (this comment may seem redundant but unicode support should not be taken for granted - major commercial programms do not support it).

  • Thanks! Really)
  • I am voting thumbs-down ... not for GRAMPS, but for Cynthia Anderson. Why waste your time to give a review when Cynthia Anderson just copies and past your review and get the credit for it? Would she be so quick as to steal program or creative ideas?
