That error doesn't give much info, although it seems like a library issue. I don't have an environment with those versions to test, although you could try the following:
1) cd to the gnome-subtitles installation dir (usually /usr/lib/gnome-subtitles/
2) run mono --trace gnome-subtitles.exe > ~/output.txt 2>&1
This will create an output.txt file in your user dir, hopefully with more information at the end.
