Hi,
Tried to install Marathon 3.0.1.0 this morning and the install failed with an error message about not being able to copy files. On closing the installer I immediately got a message from Grisoft AVG anti-virus about having detected a threat. I assume that it was AVG that obstructed the installation and prevented at least one file being copied. The relevant details from the AVG vault are as follows:
Object name MShellmenu.dll
Object Path C:\Program Files\Marathon\
Discovery Trojan horse Downloader.Generic6.MNX
Date of detection 14/02/2008
File size 133.5 KB (136704 bytes)
Healable No
Source Backup copy
Status Infected
The version of AVG that I am using is 7.5.516 and the database and all updates are checked daily.
I checked the Grisoft web-site virus encyclopedia which had no trace of Downloader.Generic6.MNX; I did a bit of Googling around these details and found a couple of references, neither of which seemed too damning. In fact Mcafee (http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/gmarathon.sourceforge.net/downloads/1686813/) gives Marathon 3.0.0.21 a clean bill of health (including the MShellMenu.dll) while SpywareData (http://www.spywaredata.com/spyware/malware/mshellmenu.dll.php) says it's under review.
Instead I installed an old copy of Marathon v2 I had lying around and it installed with no problem - including a copy of MShellmenu.dll in the Marathon2 path!
I guess I could just switch AVG off while I install M3 but I suspect it will keep complaining every time I do a full scan.
Any thoughts, comments?
Rob
