giFT-java is a java based frontend to the giFT deamon, which could previously connect to FastTrack(TM) (as used by Kazaa(TM)). Soon it should provide access to openFT, which is in development atm.

  • 6 month update

Well, its been about 6 months now since giFT went down the tube and openFT started development. It's been pretty slow and as I said previously, I haven't been continuing development of giFT-java in this time. The file released (which is still getting a trickle of downloads) is really there at the moment for historic purposes only. giFT is starting to look a bit stabler now, although they haven't released any files officially yet. I will give it a proper look over in a few weeks when i have exams out of the way and probably recode giFT-java to be compatible. When i made giFT-java originally the plan was to make a lightweight cross platform client that could run in web browsers. Java is IMHO not the most memory efficient of languages and I think it would be a mistake to make a fully fledged client in the language. I also don't have the time to do this with all the other things i am working on. The new client will look a lot like, and have the same functionality as the old one. Check back in a couple of months and hopefully there will be a new client. TTFN Steven

  • giFT works! (well kinda)

It appears that if you run the giFT deamon with the nodesfile stored on sf (ie you delete your cached nodes file and the deamon downloads it), you can still connect to a handful of supernodes. I assume that these must belong to people who haven't yet upgraded their clients. This "mini network" only has about 1.1k users on it (atm i'm seeing 332gb files total), but you can find somethings on it unless your taste in music is as bizarre as mine! :-) I will work further on giFT-java once OpenFT is working/almost working, until then i don't see a great deal of point in carrying on development. • giFT is broken

It appears that FastTrack modified the protocol used by the network yesterday, which means that giFT no longer works. The giFt developers have begun work at analysing the new protocol. Becuase giFT-java is a frontend to the deamon, it should work without modifications with the next version of giFT, so it isn't broken. • New Project Setup

Greetings, I have setup this project seperate to the giFT project, as due to an explosion in interest and people writting frontends everything was getting rather chaotic and hard to organise. By hosting "all that is java do to with giFT" seperately, hopefully things can be coordinated slightly better and we can get some productive work done! Steven Tee
