Your package manager probably installed the binary package, genesis-2.3-Linux-bin.tar.gz. This is not always guaranteed to work on
all platforms, because there is no guarantee that you will have the same
libraries that it was compiled with. I suspect that it is a problem with
the 64 bit versions of the X window system libraries.
It is safer to download genesis-2.3-src.tar.gz and follow the directions in genesis-2.3/src/README for compiling it on your computer.
