Bad news: I'm temporarily halting any further development on frsb, and placing priority on my other MySqueaks project: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mysqueaks/ Good news: I'm working on the successor to frsb which will feature a more modular framework and much closer integration with MySqueaks. I'll try to include backward compatibility as much as possible so that it'll almost be effortless to upgrade from frsb. Watch out for this space! :)
Unfortunately I've to let schedules slip for quite a bit as I'm targeting an official 1.0.0 release for MySqueaks on the 20th July (two! more! days!) and I still have two weeks left till the end of my internship before I seriously have time to think about frsb. That's about all... Happy birthday to me in advance! :)
Just a heads-up for people who are wondering about the obvious, and severe, lack of updates here, while I just bumped up MySqueaks two days ago... If you had read the previous news, the next version of frsb will be *big*. "Problem" is, the ideas and concepts that come to my mind as I continuously define the word "big" are so much so that things may get very different in scope when the next version of frsb finally arrives. I'm now toying with the idea of migrating to a largely XML-based back-end, and using XSLs to convert information in between RSS feeds, static HTML mark-up for viewing or form fields for editing. On top of this, I'm also thinking of creating an entirely modular framework from ground up to make maintenance easier and more flexibility for expansions. These two are pretty "heavy" ideas for a singular developer like me to properly plan and sort out the details before any actual development can be practically done. Going back to the topic, I can't give an answer to how/when the next version of frsb might look like. It could simply be a tweaked version of the administration interface going by the last roadmap, or I might just simply launch it onto the new framework complete with XML. The third possibility, although remote, would be that I'll go down either paths and arrive at two different releases close to one another. The fact that I'm now juggling internship doesn't help the development plans by much as well. I just hope to raise the awareness that I'm still committed to my very first open source project, and I will still try my very best to hit the magical birthday release as promised on the last roadmap. That's about all!
Now that MySqueaks is more-or-less done for deployment here in frsb, I will be resuming part-time programming (that's because I'm doing my internship now) after I'm done with Imagine Cup round 2 due in less than two weeks from now... Anyway, here's a sneak peek! :) 1) Incorporation of MySqueaks - not a secret 2) New administrative interface - complete with WYSIWYG editor! 3) Proper database back-end for multi-site implementation - Currently this is managed by common.php and certain attributes of the users table. Having a proper database back-end will allow for more flexibility to create different portals for different users, all from the same frsb installation. It will also make it simpler to update the pages used for single installations. 4) Search Engine Friendly (SEF) URLs: This will tie-in with the new multi-site implementation. 5) Standardised AJAX framework - Time to hang up my quick and dirty code... Current contender is script.aculo.us based on Prototype. I'm not going to firm up a release date yet, but I can certainly assure you that there will be one birthday release - 19th July. Whether I can actually finish all the above before then, and think of new features for the birthday release, is anyone's guess. :D That's all for now!
Just left with the ALTER TABLE functions on that side before I can start working on frsb again. What you can expect for the next release: MySqueaks-based back-end New administrative interface WYSIWYG editor (hopefully, will be using a 3rd-party implementation)
Hello! Sorry for the lack of updates... my exams are coming up in two weeks time, so I can only resume my coding on MySqueaks (the sister project that the next version of frsb will depend on) on the 13th earliest... wait, that's a Friday? Make that the 14th on Saturday then. :D Meanwhile, I welcome any feedback for future releases! Please download and give it a shot ya? ;)
That's because I just got started on my second open source project MySqueaks! (URLs below) MySqueaks is a simple PHP class that generate SQL statements. This facilitates an easier understanding of the different parts and conditions of a SQL statement, making it more user-friendly for beginner programmers. The start of this second project means that I now need to split my 24 hours a day in between my school work, personal stuff (like brushing teeth, eating etc. :p) on top of both projects as well. As such, unless there are some other willing developers to jump on board now, do not expect much to happen here in the near future... What I intend for the next release of frsb is to incorporate MySqueaks so as to ease the development on frsb's MySQL backend as well. Since MySqueaks is not totally complete yet (it's still missing the important ALTER TABLE function that frsb will definitely need for the upgrades), please give me some time to finalise that first before I come back to frsb. After this interm release of frsb, I'll resume back to the last planned roadmap of frsb. :) Thanks for all the understanding! Even better, volunteer yourself to work on the planned features of frsb first yeah? :D That's all from me... (Happy Chinese New Year everyone!)
Major changes: 1. Re-coding for front-end interface! Read here for more information. 2. Appended 'id' and 'title' fields in the entries table with 'entry_' (breaks compatibility with older code) 3. RSS support (plus an additional time_post field for entries table) 4. Passing 'showcomments' to the URL is now deprecated in favour of 'postid': 'postid' will now show comments for that blog entry. 5. Passing 'entry' to the URL now recognises a 8-digit number (yyyymmdd) as displaying all the blog posts for that day and a 6-digit number (yyyymm) as displaying all the blog posts for that month, includes validation for invalid dates. 6. Passing 'range' to the URL specifies how many entries to display - stored as a $_SESSION variable. 7. $user_details[] array is also deprecated. Other changes: 1. New about field for users table, ideally for a short write-up at the sidebar. 2. Last edit timestamp for admin area defaults to GMT times. 3. Comments timestamp defaults to GMT times.
A critical bug was just found for 2.5.0 beta. !! -_- Please re-download the file frsb_250_latest.zip, thanks!
