Here we present FijiWings for Mac and Windows, a set of macros designed to perform semi-automated morphophometric analysis of a wing photomicrograph. FijiWings uses plug-ins installed in the Fiji version of ImageJ to rapidly and accurately measure wing area, reliably detect trichome positions and calculate trichome density of a wing region selected by the user. For more high-throughput screens we have developed a macro that directs a trainable segmentation plug-in to detect wing vein locations and use this information to both measure trichome density in specific intervein regions and generate an overall ‘heat map’ of relative intervein areas. FijiWingsEZ simplifies 2.1, removing some necessaries and presents the data in kilo pixels, which are easier to digest. FijiWingsMac 2.1 permits user adjustment of 'noise' and adjustment of heat map range and color output. Click on "Files" in the menu above to download Fijiwings.
