This project has forked...
    http://www.darkarts.co.za/projects/vultures/

It seems pretty clear that Jaako is no longer interested in maintaining this.
is there any way to identify the specific sub-type of monster so the various puddings, fungi etc can be show as different. It seems to me there's no reason to limit the visual system to an ascii sets worth of images
... you are so right. The reason for the limitation is that FE (VE) is just a front end to an ascii/ansi text game. It seems that FE traps the output, reinterprets it for a gui. In the ansi version, the different creature types are identified by their colour. So you'll find the killer bee is yellow, but the queen is purple. All humans/oids are "@", but soldiers are grey, seargeants are red, liutenants are green... And, of course, the name of the creature is in a feild in it's matrix.

To understand how this is done, you need the source for Nethack as well as for Falcon's Eye.

Vulture's Eye (the fork) has more creature graphics, though the non-jaako creatures are obviously not as well done. I think it needs a consistent creature-graphics set.

I also felt that the space-holder creature could be more of an identifier (instead of being a standard soldier) ... say a sheild with the creature's character emblazoned on it.
