Enhanced Machine Controller-based Antenna Range (EMCAR)EMCAR employs EMC2-based machine control (linuxcnc.org) coupled with open source software to implement a measurement system for antenna radiation pattern data (i.e. an antenna range).

Announcing the initial release of EMCAR, the Enhanced Motion Controller-based Antenna Range. The set of codes and documentation is intended to assist the interested party in setting up an automated antenna measurement capability (i.e. Antenna Range) using non-specialized hardware and open-source software. This capability should be of interest to antenna experimenters, science educators, researchers, amateur radio operators, WiFi antenna entheusiests, and others involved in antenna measurements. The EMCAR system is based on the Enhanced Machine Controller, a system used for the control of CNC machine tool equipment. EMC2 was selected as the basis for the EMCAR system as it reliably handles the real-time motion control requirements needed to achieve the closed-loop control, accuracy, and precision required for antenna measurements. And, its RS274 G-Code interpreter implementation includes the capability to call external programs thus enabling the synchronization of RF and microwave measurement equipment with the mechanical motion, a fundamental needed for making antenna measurements.
