  Elgg is one leading open source social networking softwares. I haven't been using it for long. But till now, I am very much impressed with it. Also to mention their community site where one can get a lot of user-generated plug-ins. Get the current version (Elgg 1.6.1) from the Elgg web site now! http://elgg.org
