I write this in the hope that it will save someone else the great amount of time that I lost to this product. The bottom line is that this is not a product to be used by anyone that needs a VOIP (and specifically Asterisk) solution.Elastix is not simply a program that sits on top of Asterisk to make it more user friendly (i.e. addition of a GUI), it is a whole constellation of random programs thrown together and on top of other programs that are on top of yet more programs. A good example of this is that for the actual VOIP part of things, Elastix just takes an old version of FreePBX (which is itself a more user friendly distribution (ie addition of a GUI) of Asterisk), disables many of the components that are most valuable for doing more complex tasks such as remote extensions, and overlays the FreePBX overlay with a far less useful GUI. Elastix additionally uses an old version of Asterisk itself in the current release (Elastix 2.4 as of this review). There is also an email program, fax program, instant messaging program, random CRM programs, a "firewall", a calendar and probably a few more I am forgetting. VOIP already tends to be a security issue in its own right, but the addition of all of these other programs (and as said before, many of which are outdated in the versions employed) makes the number of potential vulnerabilities increase exponentially. Indeed massive breaches have already occurred by way of these other programs (a program called Vtiger in what looks like the most serious occurrence). I personally do not like being vulnerable due to things that are not actually used by me or those I support. The ability to employ a fine grained approach of giving others access to certain parts of the system is also lacking. I do not want to be involved every time someone wants to change a system recording (i.e. for this person dial extension XXX, hours of operations, we are closed today since it's a holiday, etc..), but with Elastix, it is either be involved in such affairs, or grant someone you probably do not want to have access to the core system, access to it all, just so they can do recordings. In FreePBX, you can simply make someone an "admin" of recordings and nothing else, but this is one of those items that is taken away from you by the Elastix overlay. Frankly, I do not see what benefit this program is to anyone in a professional or personal setting. Who would really look to a VOIP software solution for their email as well? Look elsewhere for your Asterisk based VOIP solution.

From the point of view of explained menu and other feeds this soft provides much more flexibility! I think there are several good alternatives, meanwhile this one is also a good choice!
