What does matter most in a personal computer? CPU, disks, RAM, monitor? Of course not! What matters most in a PC is: - your data - your applications So what do you really need to keep with you is a small peripheral with documents plus applications to run them. The rest is a commodity. The EcoPC coalition is headed by Ynternet.org, a Swiss not-for-profit foundation for eCulture. Its aim is a paradigm shift. No more need for full featured personal computers, only commoditized computers with an operating system (OS) and everybody will be able to manage his/her personal data the same way wherever he/she is. The EcoPC consists in: + 1 USB key (size in GB) or 1 external drive + 1 set of portable applications: the EcoSatPC-software (Sat as in "Satellite") + 1 account on your lifetime personal web space (e-mail, web site/electronic portfolio/blog, online storage) + 1 access to an e-learning platform for your lifelong learning To run properly, an EcoPC needs a commodity PC with an operating system (Windows only for the moment but this will change) To get EcoPC full features, the EcoPC needs an internet connection, with high speed when possible. This leads to: * ECOLOGY. Less unused hardware: non-geek people don't use their own computer all the day. * EASE OF USE. Less compatibility problems when switching from one station to another since applications are part of the EcoPC solution. Moreover the access to he eLearning platform aims at giving to anyone the fundamental know-how to efficiently use IT. * ECONOMY. Cheaper equipment per user: only 1 EcoSatPC per user and 1 PC for several persons depending on usage needs. * SECURITY. More secure use: personal data can be encrypted on the key and backed up on an online server, so that loosing ones key means buying another one plus restoring saved data. * ETHICS. The base of the EcoPC system runs with Free Software (as in Freedom), and Ynternet.org is a not-for-profit foundation so services and products are a long-term solution for mobile IT. Major services will be delivered for free (as a beer) as long as customers will need them. More information on http://www.ecosatpc.net/
