TIFF Import and Other Proposed Enhancements

    Hello Folks,

I would like to make use of Engauge for digitizing images of well logs. These are extremely large images (hundreds of megapixels, typical dimensions 2000 pixels by 100000 pixels), and contain what is essentially a very long strip chart recording of various geophysical properties recorded in a wellbore versus depth. I have briefly looked into using Engauge for this purpose, and found that it currently doesn't meet my needs in several respects. Therefore, I would like to propose the following enhancements:

    1. Support import of TIFF files (probably via libtiff).
    2. Support images up to at least 2 gigapixels, and at least 32 gigapixels in either dimension.
    3. Support vertical orientation of X axis in order to handle large images with vertical X axis orientation that aren't easily rotated.
    4. Support input of metadata regarding the image that can be optionally included in the exported data file.

To be fair, it has been a while since I last tried using Engauge for this purpose, and I haven't used it for anything else. So, I may have overlooked some existing capabilities.

I would be interested to know whether someone else may have already implemented or started working on any of these enhancements. If not, then I propose to start working on them myself. I would probably attempt to tackle the TIFF file import issue first.

I have not yet reviewed the Engauge source code or development docs to any substantial degree, and would appreciate any tips that someone may be able to provide to help get me started down the right path.

    Thanks,
    Kevin M.
