Project Feed

  • New DIET-PC website

The project website has moved to http://dietpc.org (a.k.a. http://www.dietpc.org/), with the help of Gus Gollings and ThinLinx. The DIET-PC wiki contents will likewise be relocated to http://wiki.dietpc.org/ (an open access wiki). The new website contains has the same content as the old, with some minor cosmetic improvements. All DIET-PC 3 downloads will be relocated to the new website, but earlier downloads will remain in the SourceForge File Release System. Redirections are in place to ensure that the DIET-PC 3 assembly frameworks download from the new server. The main reason for the move is that the SourceForge FRS and the limited-capacity SourceForge website are not suitable for implementing DIET-PC 3's "feed" concept, which requires a simple but scalable HTTP service. All other elements of the DIET-PC project (trackers, mailing list, forums etc) will remain with SourceForge for the foreseeable future.

  • DIET-PC 3 Binary Feeds Online

It is now possible to construct DIET-PC 3 boot images for ARM, ARM EABI, PowerPC, x86 and x86_64. To do this, you will need to download one of the dietpc3_framework_XXX-DDMMYY.tar.bz2 bundles (not necessary if using a DIET-PC 3 development VM, which have these preloaded), run "make fetch-ipks" to recursively grab the current feed state for the relevant architecture, and then follow additional instructions in the provided README. DIET-PC version 3 is still a work in progress, and some aspects of it remain unfinished. In particular, there are no source debs or any kind of automated source code compilation aids at present, and internationalisation packages are missing (US-English locale only). The kbuild assembly mechanism is rather crude, and the firmware constructor still only builds initrds. All of these things will be improved in future. The main DIET-PC 3 improvements, compared with DIET-PC 2, are runtime package management (use of Debian-like ipkg packages), newer components (e.g. glibc 2.7, Xorg 7.4), and a wider selection of components with finer-grained modularity. DIET-PC 3 is - or will be - designed with disk-based deployments in mind (augmentable and precision-upgradeable firmware), although it is still possible to create network-bootable ramdisk images also.

  • DIET-PC 3 Development VMs Released

Debian Lenny QEMU virtual machines for ARM, ARM EABI, PowerPC, x86 and x86_64 are now available at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=49613&package_id=261488&release_id=574093. These VMs are suitable for DIET-PC 3 development and testing, and include a DIET-PC 3 image assembly framework. As with the DIET-PC 2 VMs, these VM packages include everything needed to run them on a Windows platform; the x86 and x86_64 VMs also include a means to easily convert them to VMware virtual machines (which is recommended). They are accessible via VNC and SSH as well as the console; graphical consoles are only provided for x86 and x86_64 VMs due to emulation bugs and limitations on other platforms. No-frills graphical environment - ICEWM, Firefox, Thunderbird, Xterm, and not much else (no KDE or Gnome).
