DFBCar is a linux lightweight embedded directfb program written in C and geared towards use in a car on small lcd screens. This system uses xine-lib for media playback and DirectFB library for the gui and video output.

DFBCar provides gui control of xine-lib using directfb. With this ability, a small embedded multimedia system of less than 25mb is capable. http://dfbcar.sourceforge.net/ DFBCar provides nice gui control of cds, dvd, directory listing, audio cds, etc. and playback of all music and video files including dvd navigation support for the framebuffer. X is not needed. Control is provided by either the keyboard or lirc if a remote is installed. Playback of music files includes a directory listing, scrolling of the playing file(artist - title), and playback time. With a supported accelerated graphics driver provided by directfb, playback is smoother and less cpu intensive for supported graphics cards. On a epia-m10000 ezra, playback of divx files uses 50% of the cpu and a dvd uses 70-80%. These motherboards and DFBCar are a nice platform for use as a multimedia system in your vehicle. Help is needed on this project for general code clean up, implementation of new features, and much much more.
