You start it with "devcpp.exe -c ."
That works fine if you are starting Dev-cpp *on it's own*, but there's no way (as far as I know) to pass the same command line switches to Dev-cpp when you double-click on a file in an Explorer window.

OK, I use it offline with Win XP Pro edition.
I originally thought I could use the regular edition from a memory stick and indeed, it worked fine.
But the memory stick didn't always have the same drive letter and Dev-CPP gave me a similar message to what you described.
I don't recall exactly where but I believe there is an option somewhere that allows you to point Dev-CPP to an alternate...

Many thanks. The portable version is very handy for me.

Sorry, I misunderstood.
What OS version are you using?
Honestly, I haven't tried associating files with the portable version.
I installed it on a mem stick and use it occasionally offline on a Win XP box in my shop.
I have a couple of compilers on my Win2K machine and haven't tried to make DevCpp the default.
I'll play with it and see what I can come up with.
Roy.

I'm not making myself clear.
I want to be able to click on a C file in an Windows Explorer and have it open in Dev-C++ Portable.
If I associate C files with Dev-C++ from within Dev-C++, it works but it doesn't open Dev-C++ using the Portable exe, i.e. it opens the file with [Rootdir]\Dev-CppPortable\App\devcpp\devcpp.exe. It thinks I am starting Dev-C++ for the first time and asks for...

Associating with Window$ explorer won't do a thing for you.
I recommend taking a look at a site for beginners which will get you started.
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/9818/win32tut/index.html is a fairly nice tutorial which guides you through getting started and some files you will find useful. (The author has another tutorial at a different location but he doesn't use...

Is there any way to associate this portable version of Dev-C++ with C files?
When I associate with Windows Explorer, Dev-C++ open up with nothing there.

Using dev-C++ portable at school ^^
most things are locked down here, like for example command prompt and i dont know if this affects compiling projects, but individual source files compile fine.
When trying to compile projects, the compiler just stops at about 33% of the way.
the compiler log says this:
Compiler: Default compiler
Building Makefile: "\\NTH2\nicolaso$\My...
