The DejaVu fonts are a font family based on the Bitstream Vera Fonts. Its purpose is to provide a wider range of characters while maintaining the original look and feel.
While not exactly a perfect set of fonts for use with LaTeX (where they still need some extra elements), it is a superb work for use with low-resolution devices like a monitor screen, while keeping everything Free (in the Freedom sense of the work). I hope that, with a little more work, we can have these beautiful typefaces available with proper hints and kerning for paper-based typesetting with high-quality systems like those based on the TeX engine. (And, of course, I hope that the LaTeX side of it, with projects like bera, also advances and the work gets merged, to unite the forces).
