Commune is an attempt at an intuitive and easy to use fusion of IRC, ICQ, FTP, USENET and Napster. The server is being written in pure Java to ensure maximum cross-platform compatability. The server has been designed with strong plugin support.

After almost a year, I have restarted the commune project. My final school year is completed and I should have time to spend on commune. Right now I'm cleaning up the sources and merging in the new version of hysqldb which the project relies on. I plan to write a new client in C++ using the wxWindows cross-platform toolkit so hopefully there will be native UNIX and Windows versions soon, although a UNIX client takes priority. I am going to try and continue the Java client also. Major feature update will be the use of SSL for secure transport. Stay tuned for more over the coming months. --Niall O'Higgins
Client package available at: https://sourceforge.net/project/?group_id=5558 take a look. doesn't work with current release of server (works with a later un released version) but when I release CommuneServer X2 it will work.
Sorry for not releasing any new code for the past 2 or 3 months, but I'm not yet ready to release anything. I have been doing MAJOR work on the Commune Server & Client (http://communeclient.sourceforge.net), and now have a pretty usable IRC-like system. I am currently rewriting the CommuneServer (calling it CommuneServerX2) in a more object oriented and extensible manner, using some ideas I've seen in the excellent Java Napster Server, Jnerve(http://jnerve.sourceforge.net). From the 2nd of June onwards I will be on my summer break and will be able to commit alot more time to the project. I forsee a final release sometime this summer; already the foundations are pretty good (although they need to be moved around a bit). Anyway, expect a new, functional release in about a month. Watch this space! --Niall O'Higgins.
OK people, I doubt many (if any) people are going to read this or even download commune at this stage in the projects life. I have done most of the foundation work; the AdministrationServer and PluginLoaders are more or less complete and I can now begin work on the interesting stuff, implementing the Commune Interaction Protocol. This will be the final release without any implementation of the Commune Interaction Protocol at all. The next version will hopefully be released side-by-side with a GUI Java 2 client, which I have also been working on. Anyway, if you have any questions, or if you want to help (which would be much appreciated!), please do not hesitate to email me at niallohiggins@mindless.com or commune@users.sourceforge.net. Hi there, Niall O'Higgins here just announcing the first public release of the latest Commune Server sources. The sources are really just for developers who want to take a look at the code. The server is far from functional; much work needs to be done. I have pretty much finished the Administration Server, which is pretty cool (I think anyway). The basic OOP architecture of the program has also been done, although I admit there are still some things to be worked out. Plugin support has been implemented in a basic form; I'm not sure when I'll be really working on this aspect as currently I'm working on the Java 2 Client and on the actual implementation of CIP (Commune Interaction Protocol). When the specs of CIP have been finalised I will post them here; as of now they aren't finished. The client is being written in Java 2 SE with Swing for the GUI. I have only really just started to design the GUI, but I am making some progress. I hope to have plugin support for the client soon and some wrappers to allow cb64 (A java Commadore 64 emulator) and other Java programs to run within it. Anyway, not many people are going to read this I suspect, but if you are interested in what I'm doing don't hesitate to contact me. You can mail me at commune@users.sourceforge.com or niallohiggins@mindless.com. Bye now!
