Using HFSExplorer I was able to export an old mac external SCSI (DB-25) HFS to apple disk image (*.dmg) format. Surprisingly, this format works with Basilisk II (as an installed disk) where I was able to transfer the files into a smaller container. The read only is the best part, no unintended harm, which is what I was after. Note: I had to run in administrator mode to get HFSExplorer to "see" the external SCSI port (adaptec).
