Anywhere Board Games (ABG) allows users to play board and card games on the web in real time on multiple machines (PC, Linux, iPhone, iPad, and Android). ABG runs as a Google+ Hangout App (go to http://anywhereboardgames.com to start it), or as a stand-alone PHP app.
Unlike other gaming environments, we had a peculiar vision: projecting the main board on our table and using laptops or tablets to control our hands (with other friends joining in remotely).
ABG runs on PHP 5 and Apache (which is provided with the Windows installer). It supports flipping, stacking, rotating, rolling, and shuffling of pieces, so most board and card games are playable.
- Import your own scanned game pieces and cards (must be accessible by a URL)
- Uses a PHP5 server for multiple clients
- Uses HTML5 for interface which works on Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and IE10
- Uses touch events for iPhone, iPad, and Android
Thanks for so usefull software.
Why review my own software? To be fair and open. Right now (as of 7/16/2012) the release of ABG on Google+ Hangouts makes it significantly easier to use, but we are definitely missing help text (for both end-users and game designers). However, I was able to get a good game of Settlers of Catan in and a bunch of games of the Pokemon TCG starter set with my 8 year old. So I achieved my initial goal: to be able to remotely play games with my father who lives pretty far away. I hope to continue to expand the project to make it more useful for the general public.
