If you see a bug in Blacklight, please submit it to the bug tracker. I believe I have solved the incompatibility with Ubuntu 8.04, although the non-automounting problem probably won't be fixed by Blacklight (as it was introduced in Ubuntu and there are only hackish ways for Blacklight to solve it). I have, however, fixed a common race condition that caused Blacklight to hang after successfully encoding video. I will package up the new version ASAP once I've verified that it is stable. Look out for it shortly. I will post a new news item when it is out. Christopher Lees Developer Blacklight Walkman Manager
Sony Walkman users, please note: There is a bug in Ubuntu 8.04 that prevents the drag 'n' drop Walkmans from being automatically mounted. Fully-updating your system may apparantly fix the problem. If it doesn't help, or if you don't want to update for whatever reason, you can still use your Walkman with MTP-aware programs (Blacklight is not MTP-aware). Or, you can manually mount your Walkman to /media/WALKMAN, making sure that directory is writable by your user account. This is probably the better workaround for us, as we need some way to get videos onto the Walkman. Also note, the Walkman's directories in 7.10 were in uppercase, but in 8.04 they appear as lowercase. Linux is case-sensitive, so Blacklight will not find the VIDEOS folder. You should start Blacklight without your Walkman mounted, save the videos to a place on your hard disk, and then move them across to the Walkman later. I will shortly be updating Blacklight to allow it to recognise the different directory names, but you will still need to update your Ubuntu system or manually mount the drive. This issue may affect other distributions.

I am proud to announce that Blacklight 2.1 is now available for download. I recommend updating to 2.1 as it fixes a number of annoying bugs. Another great reason to update is that it now includes a DVD ripping plugin! It requires Mplayer and the usual DVD viewing dependencies (libdvdnav, libdvdread, libdvdplay, and libdvdcss2), but is much more convenient than ripping with some other program and then encoding in Blacklight. The DVD rip plugin is something I'd really like you to hack around on. It's very simply coded and there's scope for lots of features, like audio ripping (great for music DVDs) and ripping multiple chapters into one file like Acidrip can do. Blacklight is written in Python so it's very easy to start working with and hacking around on. I'm sure there are still bugs in it, so please report them wherever you see them. Thanks for using Blacklight! I hope your Walkmans are still giving you hours of enjoyment.
I am proud to announce the release of Blacklight 2! This release adds audio transcoding and an exciting plugin framework for extending Blacklight's audio and video input capabilities, as well as managing the media after it goes onto the Walkman. Blacklight 2 also has a more responsive, informative, and nicer-looking interface. There is potential for later versions of Blacklight to support photos - the ground work has already been laid. I'd also pleased to be able to tell you that not only is there an easy-to-install source package, but also a Debian package. This works on all architectures (but Blacklight will probably NOT work very well on PowerPC due to issues with the video encoding backend). Also expect a release of the DVD rip plugin soon. If you find any bugs or problems with Blacklight 2.0, please submit them to the bug tracker. Blacklight 2.0 is dedicated to Sony, for producing a great iPod alternative that works with Linux. Thank you for your interest in Blacklight.
