    I don't have an AMD64 to try it out on unfortunately, but at a guess from the error, you could try opening up the makefile and add -fPIC to to the compile switches. Alternatively, it may be case sensitive, and you could try replacing -fpic with -fPIC in the linking stage. Sorry I can't be more helpful with this, let me know how it goes.
