For the hobbiest not afraid of the command line, provides a rich and active playground for working with video. Many little programs available to do just about anything with video. Be aware it takes a bit of work to get comfortable with it.

Really, you always must have this installed in your pc. You won't regret it. With avisynth you script your video editing and synthesize it in real time, without using hd space, when you like how your video looks, then you can recode it. Ideal for subtitling, put censure on some scenes, etc.
