ArkWorld is a multi-player, free-form roleplay game system. The server uses XML for it's configuration and game description, and is written in C and C++ for Linux (and other un*x?). The clients are currently being written in GAMBAS and Visual Basic.

Development is well under way on a new, GUI-based client for the ArkWorld system. The client is primarily designed using GAMBAS for Linux and other POSIX systems which can run GAMBAS (see http://sf.net/projects/gambas for more information on GAMBAS). I have chosen BASIC (well, GAMBAS is almost basic) as the language for this new client because it speeds up development vastly. The client boasts the following features: Full v0 specification compliance (v0 is actually developed using the server and this client, so it's the most up-to-date client available), and is expected to continue to be compliant all the way up to the v3 specification (which is, as yet, unwritten). The ArkWorld client will be uploaded some time this month, so keep your eyes open and be patient! Finally, for all of you who are still using Microsoft Windows, we are porting the ArkWorld client to Windows as we speak. It is designed as a clone of the GAMBAS client mentioned above. We may or may not upload this at the same time as the GAMBAS client, depending on certain licensing issues we will have to resolve first.
The ArkWorld project uses the CommonC++ libraries for it's communication and xml parsing routines. This works fine under Linux, but I'm told that there are some issues with CommonC++ and other unices (Open/FreeBSD for instance). While the ArkWorld team appologise for this inconvenience, we would like to point out that this is not an issue with our code directly and the guys (and gals?) at the GNU CommonC++ project may well have already sorted this out, but I am told by a member of the team that the ArkWorld server will not run properly under BSD and probably other UN*X o/ses.
