FWIW, At the time I made two requests: - A license change to LGPLv2 or later - A release of the repository history (there are tools to convert it to SVN). Nowadays interest has completely shifted to other, more powerful, filesystems like ZFS.

I have started reading through the documentation and its become clear why some developers tried to compile and then gave up after a week or two. I am no expert but it seems to me that there is alot of work do here, and due to the differences between Tru64/HP-UX and Linux - lots of design decisions need to be made to port advfs to Linux. That said I still intend to have a go, I will be...

I don't k now which would be easier to port but the HP-UX version addressed some nagging issues that existed in the Tru64 version so its probably the better one to start with. If you haven't looked at the documentation, you might want to start there for a description of the overall design and the things that were addressed as part of the port.

I haven't done any programming in the last few years so I am a little rusty and I know its going to be massive learning curve, but I think I will take a stab at it all the same (if nothing else I will get some understanding about how its put together!). I see that both Tru64 and HP-UX source has been released...Do you know if it is better to start with the HP-UX or Tru64 source? Thanks.

Its nice to hear from a happy advfs user! When we released the code last summer, a developer or two took a stab at trying to get it to compile but stopped after a week or so. HP didn't attempt a port because having ported it once already, we thought it would be more work than we could take on ourselves and that by the time we finished, btrfs would already be out. It also seems like...

Thanks for the reply and the information. I used to use advfs in the 90's and it was great! I am aware of btrfs project and my look into it further but I guess the reason I was asking was I assumed that a port of advfs would be out much faster than the btrfs. To be honest I am a bit shocked that nobody has started to port it - given the number of forum postings I have seen over the...

At this point no one is working on porting the file system to Linux. The code was released as a reference implementation for anyone who wanted to see how it was implemented and perhaps re-use the designs or the code in a Linux file system. If you're interested in advfs, you might consider the btrfs project as it has a similar feature list and plans to go beyond what we have with advfs.
