  • This is a good tool for building English vocabulary (I'm referring to the 1100 Words You Need to Know program, not the others). However, you will notice the book that the content was pulled from is not Public Domain and the copyright is still active. You can even still buy the book from Amazon! Of course I will not report the infringement or re-appropriation of copyrighted material as GPL, but it does not appear very professional. Perhaps there was written permission gained by the author, but no such indication was given. Now I will note areas that explicitly need improvement 1.) Formatting: It is impressive that the program gives an IPA notation of the word, but the grammatical category is not given (n., adj, adv., vt., etc.) and the definition method is not formalized enough in my opinion (verbs sometimes have "to" preceding the definition and sometimes do not) All the idioms are plagued by having "Exapmle" instead of "Example". Sometimes also, the idiom in quotes also contains the first part of the definition, which is confusing. This is most easily seen in the 2nd idiom of the day "pig in a pokean" which should read "pig in a poke" (an being part of the definition). 2.) Bloat and General Flow: I feel that the program does not gain enough from using J2ME Polish to justify using it. The nicer interface results in a rather big .jar file which as a result cannot help tutor vocabulary for people on lower-end phones. There is also a subtle issue in the Flash Cards function that sometimes skips you from pressing the "correct" button on a card, to seeing the actual definition of the next card, rather than backing you out to the list of words again. In my opinion, it would be a good idea to make a vocabulary trainer that uses definitions from Wiktionary, includes brief etymology, category, pronunciation, and example entries and that does not have to resort to external interfaces that increase .jar size. In my opinion, a lot of the readings from the book were contrived and unnatural, so readings for this new program would be more natural. I fully intend to work on such a project and one called Vocabuilder (on Google Code) I am thankful for this project, but know that things can get better for the J2ME scene even as it dwindles. Not to mention things can be done more legally. I give it a hearty thumbs-up nonetheless!
  • thanks man, great soft!
  • A good project. I am glad that you want to make cheap.
