I am a french user of the zd1211 driver and I would have some
explanations about it.
Sorry for my approximate english, I hope it can be understood.
I already contacted Markus who told me to send my message in this
mailling list. So that's what I'm doing. Thanks for your answer Markus.
I changed parts of my original message because I learned some things
in the last days.
I read the README and CHANGES files of the driver, and I would like to
share my experience.
Perhaps you could explain some phenomena to me.
I use the 2.6.9 kernel that I compiled.
I run the following commands :
$ make KSRC=/usr/src/linux-2.6.9/
$ make KSRC=/usr/src/linux-2.6.9/ install
$ modprobe -v zd1211
I had already set un my ip with $ ifconfig wlan0 <myip>.
I can use the driver but it doesn't work each time.
First, I have to plug my dongle only when the system has loaded all
about usb printing. Else the system freezes on the usb detection : It
fits what I read : "- Driver seems to block the usb bus" in the CHANGES
I tried to use the driver in both Ad-Hoc and Managed mode.
I specify that I use my zd1211 based dongle (on Mandrake 10.1) with
others (ORiNOCO from Ageer) hermes 802.11b cells (on Windows or Knoppix).
In the first mode (Ad-Hoc), I get troubles with channel.
I notice that the frequence always changes until a sychronization with
an other cell occurs, but I don't know how sychronization process works.
Once sychronisation occured, the frequency doesn't change any more, and
if I plug an other hermes based cell, this last cell couldn't sychronize
with others, why ?
Perhaps there is a problem with my hermes chips, but it works normaly
whitout my zd1211 based dongle.
In the Managed mode, I can't set up a Acces Point Adresse :
# iwconfig wlan0 ap 00:02:2D:0D:AC:56 return
Error for wireless request "Set AP Address" (8B14) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported.
So I use the essid of the AP.
Will the "set AP" fonction work in future ?
The network works fine every time, if I plug my dongle just after the
usb detection. I notice that it works because AP isn't 00:00:00:00:00:00.
Could you explain why this doesn't work when I plug my dongle long after
the usb detection (when the Destop Environnement is loaded) ? I think
there are scripts that run only during system boot, but I don't know all
In the Managed mode, I don't loss my connection if I plug other hermes
based chips. So I prefer to use this mode.
I'm not a developper, so I don't know how the driver works ; but I
really hope you can answer my request.
If you need other information, in order to answer me, please ask and I
will provide these to you.
I can test other drivers if needed (in 802.11b mode only).
Do you think that I have to update my wireless tools ?
$ iwconfig -v
iwconfig Wireless-Tools version 27
