I doubt Brian's objection has to do with the particular character used... On the other hand, using a '*' is an interesting idea, readability-wise. It make it somewhat easier to see why it is useful to allow a prefix - people use bulleted lists in documents for a reason. The whole issue is a matter of readability vs. minimal syntax, I guess.
