I did choose msmpeg.
When starting xvidcap from a console window, and I
press the record button, xvidcap quits and tells
ŤCould not find audio grab device /dev/dspť
I guess that this message does not fit the true error

That's a message originating from FFMPEG.
It means there is a problem with accessing the sampling device.
Either it's not OSS compatible, it's not there, or you don't
access permissions to it.
aahhh .... missed the msmpeg bit. This is fixed in 1.1.3rc1.
1.1.2 doesn't support audio for msmpeg4.
1.1.3 has msmpeg4(v3) renamed to DIV3 and additional
msmpeg4(v2) as DIV2. 1.1.3 supports audio for both, but
WMP will only be able to play the files generated with DIV3
(DIV3 generates ASF files [rename to *.asf], DIV2 generates
AVI files. WMP only supports DIV3 in ASF files, but FFMPEG
doesn't have an audio encoder that is supported by WMP in
ASF files. Hence you can create audio streams in ASF files,
but can only play them with mplayer.)
