For a new user who has no ~/.xvidcap.scf file specifying a default
codec, the value still comes up as NONE. If I try to change this
through the drop-down menu in the configuration screen, I get an
application freeze and have to kill it manually.

yep, noticed the misbehaviour about an empty .xvidcap.scf
That's on my list.
As a workaround for the freeze, try to select a different
the arrow keys instead of the mouse.
fixed in CVS
changed brain-dead default of CODEC_NONE to CODEC_MPEG1
