Is there a way to do critical path analysis with xProcess? If not within the Tool itself does anybody have any suggestions how one would go about exporting the relevant data and do the analysis in another Tool such as OpenOffice Calc or Excel?

We mainly use xProcess for managing smaller agile projects. However if possible we would also like to use it more for projects in which a more classical project management process is needed. In such projects it is mainly used for evaluating various scenarios in the early planning stages of a project. The limited reporting facilities, the lack of baselines etc currently limit our use of an otherwise great tool. Given the right ideas and a clear scope we might be able to contribute to the further development of xProcess.

  • Clearly if you enter dependencies between tasks in xProcess it is possible to calculate critical paths basing the length of the task on the auto-scheduled dates. The assumption in agile project though is that projects are resource constrained rather critical path constrained, so the length of the project is defined by availability of resources, combined with the dependencies between tasks. I'd be interested in the calculations you'd like to do and whether you also want to take into account such resource constraints or whether you're looking for a critical path based only on dependencies and task length.

You can certainly export the tasks to a spreadsheet or other tool. If you're using v3.5 you can use the "Export" button from the task table - this allows you to define which columns you want to export (or even define your own columns). This is a new feature with little user documentation at present so let us know what you would like to export and we'd be happy to help.
