I just uninstalled KDE, and for some reason now at start up x11 begins and then shuts down.  I even uninstalled x11 and re-installed and it is still the same error.  Any ideas?

    • Broken ~/.xinitrc script, most likely.

That's my feeling, but I don't know how to fix it, let alone find it.  People have told me that I need to use a text editor, but none that I have will let me save to .filename .  Is there a step by step way to fix it in the osx terminal?

    • Yes.  In Terminal.app, go to your home directory and type

      pico .xinitrc

Alternatively, if you have BBEdit installed, you can type

      bbedit .xinitrc

      Hope this helped.
