Let my first cite the content of the FAQ-page that i found:

Would anybody care to translate that into understandable language? What I did
1) I copied the contents of the "essential"-package from the mplayer homepage
into a newly made directory with the name: /usr/lib/win32 (i did not have a
win32 directory so far....
2) in my personal xine config file ~/.xine/config uncommented the lines
But I still cannot watch any streams from http://www.ARD.de. :(
So if you could please rewrite the FAQ in a way, that also I do understand
what to! So that also I can watch RealMediaStreams since apparently I did
something completely wrong in interpreting the FAQ?!
Thx in advance,
an helpless linuxuser who is close to changing back to windows just because
she still cannot watch the news...
PS: I also "apt-get removed" my xine, than got the codecs and installed xine
again without any effect at all....

It seems the FAQ is actually pretty understandable, since you did exactly the

I know the Windows Media variant works here, because I watch them from time to
Could you please run xine from console with "xine --verbose=2", try playing
one of the streams and send us the complete console output?
/* Nobody will ever see this message :-) */
panic("Cannot initialize video hardware\n");
