You are wrong and correct at the same time. SyncFB does not have the SAME features as mga_vid, but has many. mga_vid provides a direct way to access supported Matrox cards while making use of card-based colour conversion and image scaling. SyncFB was reworked to target the users of high-resolution displays (your monitor).
From the SyncFB website:
D E S C R I P T I O N
A video output driver for the Matrox G200/G400 cards based on mga_vid by Aaron Holzmann. It synchronizes an image stream with the displays frequency by implementing a fifo buffer on the card. It also supports image scaling though the backend scaler and simple de-interlacing by scaling the video fields.
The biggest advantage is the synchronization of the video to the monitor refresh. This avoids the video "tearing" problem.
If you want tv-out, use mga_vid. The features of syncfb are not beneficial to tv-out anyway. SyncFB was designed for monitor output. This is what it's features tailor.
