After a few days of googlin' and playin' with ALSA and the zillion files
at /etc/alsa, trying to understand "ainit", I managed to solve my
problem with AC3 output. James: You were right. I was using dmix (I've
learned ALSA enables this by default if the soundcard doesn't support
hardware mixing), and after I found out how to disable it, I was able to
play 5.1 sound again. Yea! :)
Now that this is working, I wanted to try out the upmix post audio
plugin. But somehow, it doesn't work for me. I get normal, stereo
I tried to run xine like this:
xine --post upmix
and I also tried out kaffeine and gxine, which have GUI for setting this
up, but the result was the same: no errors, but stereo sound.
Am I missing something? Does this plugin rely on some feature of the
