I'm positive the DVD drives (the ROM and the writer) are on hdb and hda respectively because I can mount them (although the writer was not recognized until I upgraded to the 2.6.9 kernel). I also learned that the ide-generic kernel module does not support DMA. The driver I need for that is ata-piix. I'll try removing ide-generic from the /etc/modules file and replacing it with ata_piix see what happens. As far as the video card is concerned, I am using the ati driver. Is that OK or is there perhaps another module that I should load? Proprietary ATI drivers exist for Radeon 9600 from this site http://xoomer.virgilio.it/flavio.stanchina/debian/fglrx-installer.html packaged for Debian and all. Problem is they're for 386 and I'm on amd64. The binaries won't work of course, so I tried compiling the sources on my system, but one of the scripts provided by this site is also expecting a 32bit system, so it refuses to compile the source, even though I can't see an a priori reason why the source wouldn't compile just as well on my system. So, is the ati module OK for a Radeon 9600? Alex. |
