Final Result: Xine working okay. Took the FAQ hint on upping the nice value for X & Xine both. Now xine runs well enough, still drops & discards frames but video is smooth to the eye. I'd like to suggest that the Xine FAQ be changed to suggest the use of the command 'renice' to change the nice number. This allows the running of Xine as a non-privileged user instead of as root. It does require root access to a term window and it's a little inelegant as a tweak but it works fine. Also, for the record, the machine Xine is installed on is a 500 Mhz Pentium with 384 M ram, Matrox Millenium G200 with 8 M of video ram. The 300 Mhz machine I mentioned was an older Win98 box on which I use to watch videos until windows does what it does best -- go weird. Still trying to fix that one and none too optimistic about it! ;-) Anyway, I'm happy with Xine. It's a very nice player. Kudos to the developers and thanks to everyone who has helped! Mark |
