I'm using:

xdvik version 22.84.10 (Xaw toolkit)
Libraries: kpathsea version 3.5.5, T1lib version 5.0.1

since the latest tetex upgrade, in a gentoo machine.

With this new version I'm experiencing a slow xdvi start-up, which does not affect the working speed - after loading, it works like it was working before.

After some experiences, I reported this in gentoo forums (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-319519.html) and got an workaround: running "LC_ALL=C xdvi" instead of "xdvi" /solves/ this issue.

    I was unable to reproduce the problem. Since the gentoo page cited in the bug report mentions that it also occurs with Eterm and xterm, I suspect that it was a problem in the X libraries (or Xt or Xaw, etc.)

    So, I am closing this.

    The details: My system was a current Ubuntu 12.04.4 system, with my own compiled xdvik:

    xdvik version 22.86 (Xaw toolkit)
    Libraries: kpathsea version 6.2.0dev, freetype version 2.4.8

    I tried
    LC_ALL=pt_PT.utf8 xdvi story
    and
    LC_ALL=pt_PT.utf8 LC_CTYPE=pt_PT.utf8 xdvi story
    and xdvi started right up, both times.
