XChat 1.9.5:

I emerged 1.9.5 on Gentoo and it looked fine already,
but changed the font anyway to Trebuchet.
But now and then some lines are blank (as if a user
just says a blank line), but when you try to select it
with the mouse the letters do appear but all over each
other and stuff. Completely unreadable.

    hello,
Try exporting the LC_ALL variable to ISO8859-1 (or
ISO8859-SomethingElse) in a terminal and then start X-Chat
from the same terminal window. This mostly happens because
you don't have encoding set correctly when you start X-Chat.
If that does not help, come to #xchat on irc.chatjunkies.org.
    regards,
    RQ

bah, my brain was kinda AWAY when i posted the message
before. The value u need to export is not ISO8859-x, but
rather your locale name (en_US, for example).
You can see the locale currently used in X-Chat when
starting it. X-Chat displays it in the first active window.
    before connecting to the server.
    Regards,
    RQ

This bug still is in CVS and is driving me crazy ... its like you switched so some sort of invisble mode ... the main window is commencing but nothing is shown ... the window stays blank until you mark the letters with the mouse.
Think this has something to do with the following changes:

    - xtext: Implemented scrolling instead of full redraws when not using
a background image or transparency. This improves scrolling on
machines that draw AA text very slowly.

.... before that change xchat 1.9.x worked good for me ....
Glib Version is 2.0.6, GTK is 2.1.3, pango is 1.1.4 .. if that helps
