Is there any way to write the equivalent of "\overline{x}" in wxMaxima? I'm
doing statistics, and it would help.

Followup: one can do that in command-line Maxima by entering "x̄" (that is:
quote x combining-macron quote.) But when I enter that into wxMaxima, it
triggers an infinite loop. Ooops. I'll file a bug report on github.

The combining macron is unicode U+0304 (that is, hex 304.)

In fact, any non-ascii Unicode character will produce this behavior. Filed as
issue 204 on github.

• This is expected since the socket communication between maxima and wxmaxima is
by default in ascii. You probably need to configure your lisp so that it opens
the socket in utf-8. Which lisp are you using?

Steel Bank Common Lisp, which is bundled with the Mac OS Maxima release

Maxima reports:

Maxima 5.26.0 http://maxima.sourceforge.net

using Lisp SBCL 1.0.52.0-11e4aa5

How would I configure that?

• Create a file called .sbclrc in your home directory and put this line into it:

(setf sb-impl::*default-external-format* :utf-8)

And it works.

Thank you so much.
