The shell scripts all use the idiom:

foo 2>&1 > /dev/null

presumably with the intent of sending stderr to /dev/null.
instead, stderr is sent to the samplace as stdout and then stdout
is sent to /dev/null.

To fix, change everything to

foo > /dev/null 2>&1
