Java Service Wrapper.

This version includes a fairly major bug fix caused by an integer overflow
which can cause the JVM to shutdown in 3.1.0, or restart in 3.1.1 at
certain times. The last restart was on August 21, 2004, and the next
will be on October 10, 2004. It will repeat at this regular interval.
Users who have been using the new tick based timer are not affected.

There were a number of other minor fixes and features added as well.
Please review the release notes for a full list of changes:

Java Service Wrapper.

This version includes a number of important bug fixes. We recommend that
all 3.1.0 users upgrade at their earliest convenience.

3.1.0 introduced a new tick based timer which was designed to be much
more reliable under heavy loads and work correctly across system time
changes. Several bugs have been fixed with the tick timer for the 3.1.1
release and it has undergone much more testing. While it has not yet
been set to be active by default, we do feel that is stable enough to
recommend its use by most users. It can be enabled by disabling the
use of system time with the following property:
wrapper.use\_system\_time=false

We are interesting in getting feedback both positive and negative about
the performance of this new timer. If feedback is in general positive and
no problems are reported then the goal is to make it the default in the
next release. Our internal tests show that the new tick timer meets its
goals of being much more stable under heavy loads. It also handles
time changes where the old system timer would cause JVM timeouts.

Many other changes have also gone into this release, so be sure to
review the release notes:
http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org/doc/english/release-notes.html

Java Service Wrapper Version 3.1.0

Tanuki Software, Inc. is proud to announce the 3.1.0 release of the Java Service Wrapper.

This release has been long in coming, but contains a number of new features as well as several performance improvements and bug fixes.

The Wrapper website has been redesigned with a new look. Users who register with the site now have the ability to help improve the documentation by adding comments directly to the site.
http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org

There have been several enhancements to the Windows version so it is now possible to display a console when running as a service, change the title of the console where the Wrapper is running, and access information about the user running the Wrapper as well as the user who is currently logged in.

One major improvement is the additional of a new Tick based timer which makes the Wrapper handle much better when running on heavily loaded systems. This new timer also solves problems with the system time changing. It is beta for this release and is thus disabled by default, but we urge you to try it out and give us some feedback so it can be enabled for the next release. See the documentation for the wrapper.use\_system\_time property.

There were many many other changes and improvements as well, so please visit the new web site and look over the release notes.

This version adds support for SGI Irix.
A lot of work went into this version. It includes fixing a problem with
previous Mac OSX releases where the Wrapper's native library file was
missing from the release. There were a couple other minor bug fixes as
well.

This version also adds the ability to write pid files for both the Wrapper
and its JVM on all platforms. The deprecation of the bash scripts, leading
to one single sh script that can be used on all UNIX/Linux platforms.
Added a set of JMX interfaces which allows JMX enabled applications to
control the Wrapper via their standard interface.

NOTE to Windows users, starting with this version, the wrapper.pid property
now has meaning on the Windows platform as well. If the wrapper.conf file
that you are using was creating using the template wrapper.conf file from
version 2.2.9 or earlier, this property may be set to a path which only exists
on UNIX platforms, leading to an error when you attempt to launch the Wrapper.
Simply delete or comment out this property to get things working.

We also reworked the Linux / UNIX shell scripts so that they now
work correctly when referenced as symbolic links,

This version also includes a couple of fairly significant bug fixes
discovered while porting to Mac OSX. These were causing
segmentation faults for some users on UNIX platforms.
