David Teran always said "disable the shared editing context" if you encounter problems and test again. May this be a reason in your case? I couldn't nail problems directly on the EOSharedEditingContext, but I'm sure, David knew what he said. Regarding ERXEC locking: I've never seen a deadlock in my applications without change notifications and without shared editing context. Never ever. And I do exactly nothing for locking my ECs.
