Line diff highlighting and word diff selecting are two separate features. They should not be mixed like this, And definitely not automatically. If I have some text selected this will lose my text selection!

I'm really not sure there is some realistic use case for this. One user wished for this years ago but I don't remember anybody else wanting this. What is the benefit of adding new option for this?

so you prefer a new option doing it.

    From my previous comment:

So I want answer to question: Why we need this? We don't add this kind of features just for fun.

    Automatically scroll to first difference
Automatically scroll to first Line Difference
So we have both, I use it mostly while merging.

    > Automatically scroll to first Line Difference
    No such feature in WinMerge.

I guess you mix the "scrolling" with selection. When text gets selected it might be also scrolled into that (but it has to be scrolled in code every time, no automation).

So line diff highlighting and word diff selection are separate features and for separate purposes. We aren't mixing them.

Line diff highlighting is for users to see what are the differences inside lines. Word diff selection is to select the difference in the line so it can be copied to elsewhere (or replaced by text from elsewhere). It was the original "difference highligting" before Takashi implemented the real line difference highlighting.
